This is a report of the first part of an ongoing investigation into high-school teacher's training at a state funded university. Based on a diagnosis of faculty training needs, we designed a model for educational updating, the information was gathered linearly in 59 schools and 69 modules (sub-schools) that comprise the high school system of the institution. The study was conducted based on a transactional descriptive design, in which we sought to determine the general characteristics of the target population. A survey –closed questionnaire- was used as the main instrument, applied between july and september 2007. The survey's design sought to combine the institutional needs for information about academic staff with the requirements for the design of the training model. The survey reported a set of variables which served in the characterization of academic personnel. The results are reported in categories and analytical units, to characterize the academic staff by demographic data, type of recruitment, and training referents to conform the professional, pedagogic and research competences of the faculty. The teachers preferences were systematized, especially on knowledge and application of ICT.
