The development of Digital Teaching Competence (DTC) enables teachers to address emerging challenges and prepare them for contemporary issues. The objective was to analyze the current state of DTC and the challenges that limit its development in the teaching practice of teachers in Zone 1 of Federal General Secondary Schools in Colima, Mexico (2024-2025). The research was quantitative, descriptive, non-experimental, and cross-sectional. It was obtained a total of 198 responses for analysis. A questionnaire with construct, content, and discriminant validity was administered to measure the cognitive, instrumental, and didactic-methodological dimensions of DTC. The results showed intermediate levels in the cognitive and instrumental dimensions, and greater areas for improvement in the didactic-methodological dimension. Differences were identified according to gender and teaching experience, but these were not related to the subject taught. The main limitations of the study were the use of a single data source and the inability to establish causal relationships. The contribution is a contextualized diagnosis to guide decisions regarding teacher education. It was concluded that the primary challenges in the development of continuing education are insufficient technological infrastructure and a need for training, highlighting the need for the design of public policies and training strategies adapted to the context
